Not used CW since the 1980's when I was quite active, my ability declined somewhat until I started to use the Koch method in order to bolster my re-newed interest in radio. I'm now comfortable at 17wpm with characters at 20wpm & occasional forays into 20/20wpm.I am 76 yrs old so pleased as I'm sure it helps to keep the brain active. I used to teach morse in the 80s & mentored several people through the 12wpm test. This Koch is quite new to me so I'm asking for advice on increasing my speed , also what effect does increasing age have on morse ability ?

Hi Roger, your doing very well, I am 10 years younger than you so can only go by what I have been told. It really depends on the individuals, memory, hearing ability and dexterity and if you have forays at 20wpm then I don't really see any problems.

The main point of using the Koch method is to reinforce instant recognition so the more practice the better. If you are comfortable at 20/17wpm and getting 95% copy then step it up a notch to 20/18wpm and when you get 95% copy at that speed step it up a notch again. When you get to 20/20wpm then move to 25/20wpm and carry on from their.
I hope this is of some help to you.

Thanks for that Ian.
I'm about to go on air so that should help too.

You can also try subliminal training as some people have found that helps, play Morse as background music while you are doing other things. One of my friends puts on Morse on his laptop then sits down to watch television and has noticed the improvements
